Florida Ranked #1 Best State to Retire in 2025—Here’s Why

by Michelle Morgan

If you’ve been thinking about retiring in the Sunshine State, you’re making a smart choice! According to a 2025 study by WalletHub, Florida has officially been ranked as the #1 best state for retirement. With its warm climate, tax-friendly policies, and abundance of activities, it’s no surprise that Florida continues to be a top destination for retirees.

Why Florida is the Best State for Retirement

WalletHub’s study considered key factors such as affordability, health care, and overall quality of life. While Florida does have a higher cost of living compared to some states, it makes up for it with no state income tax, no estate tax, and no inheritance tax—allowing retirees to stretch their savings further.

"Retirement is supposed to be relaxing, but it can also be incredibly stressful given that it typically puts people on a fixed income," said WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo. "The best states for retirees are those with low taxes."

In addition to financial benefits, Florida also boasts world-class healthcare facilities, a vibrant social scene, and endless recreational opportunities—from golf courses and beaches to cultural events and outdoor adventures.

How Other States Compare

While Florida took the top spot, WalletHub ranked Minnesota as the second-best state for retirement due to its strong healthcare system and protections for seniors. Colorado ranked third, offering a low poverty rate and no estate or inheritance taxes.
